It's a tough balance for those of us who encourage creativity. I've had people talk about writing a book for ages. I want to shout, "Start with a page! You haven't yet written a page!"

To one interesting friend (not a writer, mind you) I said "I think you have the ability to write a book, but I don't know if you will." Challenge accepted, he said, and wrote the damn thing! Turns out he is a writer!

One thing I've learned is that there is no amount of pressure I can assert on someone to make them do the things I believe they can, if they are not willing to do it. And so what tends to happen is that some people will continue postponing stuff up until something in their life clicks and they finally get to do it โ€“ or they give up. On the other hand, folks who are confident on doing the work, those will do it with or without my help.

As for your friend, I think there are very few things more effective than genuinely sharing our admiration honestly, including our concerns. ๐Ÿ’•

Indeed, moment and mindset have to align with timely advice for action to occur. As for my friend, he is motivated by proving himself so I knew that if I included that little twist, "...but I don't know if you will." it would make the difference in lighting the fire in his mind, and it did.
